Scope of the School
The School has a long tradition and serves as a good meeting point for scientists and students from both East and West. Its main role is educational. Therefore, it consists of a series of short courses, 2-6 hours each. The School is known for giving the opportunity to young scientists, undergraduate, and PhD students, to learn about the present status of important solid-state problems. The teaching staff ensures a high tutorial level; the lectures and short courses, require only a basic knowledge of the physics and chemistry of solids.

The main topics chosen for 2005 have, somehow, arisen from the intriguing problems reviewed during the XVIth School, held in Bialowieza, July 2-10, 2004.The scope of the School on "Materials in Transition" consists of the transient phenomena in condensed matter, the kinetics of phase transitions, catalysis, solid-state reactions, self-organization etc.

The School is organized jointly with the Vth International Symposium on Physics in Material Science, which will offer a review of many basic experimental techniques (neutrons, synchrotron radiation, muons, Mössbauer spectroscopy etc.) used in the study of materials, including time-dependent phenomena.

Traditionally, all organizational and scientific program details being overseen by top scientists. We have already received as well the agreement of several high-ranking speakers to deliver stimulating courses. Their tentative titles are available here.

A permanent poster session will be arranged with the goal of allowing thoughtful and repeated consideration of the scientific achievements presented by PhD students. Because of the organization of the School, very few papers will be accepted for presentation in oral form. We must receive information (title and abstract in doc or pdf or txt files) on the proposed presentation not later than March 15th, 2005. We are going to prepare Book of Abstracts.

Location
The International Schools of Condensed Matter Physics till 1997 were traditionally held in Bialowieza, Poland. From 1998 the Schools were organized in Suprasl. We returned to our roots in 2003, and since then the School has been held in Bialowieza, the place where it originated and developed. The small village Bialowieza lies in the woods called Puszcza Bialowieska, 100 km East from Bialystok. Accommodation in the "Bialowieski" hotel consists mainly of double-bed rooms with high standard equipment. Local buses provide service from Bialowieza to Bialystok.

Language
The official language of the School is English.

Posters
Although the School consists mainly of the short courses given by the invited teachers, there will be a small room with 20 minute oral presentations for particularly interesting contributions. In general, young scientists, and PhD students can present their achievements during the permanent poster session only. The poster dimensions shouldn't exceed [1.5m x 1.5m]. However if you need more space, let us know about it as quickly as possible and we shall do our best to satisfy your needs. For current information about the authors , see PROGRAMME.

Fees
The fee 450 EUR (400 EUR for accompanying persons), covering all local expenses, should be paid before 1st of May, 2005, with the note: "School on Physics and Chemistry of Condensed Matter", to the Bank account:

Participants who will need the Polish visa are kindly asked to apply to the School Secretary for an invitation letter.

Fellowships
A limited number of Young Scientists Awards will be granted to students and scientists up to 30 years old (occasionally 35 years old). Interested persons may apply by writing directly to us with information on whether they wish to present any poster, including its title, list of authors, affiliations and short abstract. A letter of support from the supervisor should be either attached or sent independently by the supervisor.

Transport
Current information about connections from Warsaw to Bialystok is available on our Website (to be updated). For participants from outside POLAND, who are coming by plane to Warsaw Airport (Okecie) we recommend the bus connection to Bialystok. Please, check the page GETTING HERE.

Although the level of theft is not much higher than in many other countries, please, be careful and keep all your documents, money and belongings under control.

On Tuesday 21st of June, 2005, at 15:30 the School bus will take the participants to Bialowieza. The bus will leave from the Institute of Experimental Physics, University of Bialystok, ul. Lipowa 41. On June 29th, bus transport to Bialystok will be provided by the organizers. If you cannot use our bus (especially during the first day of the School) and feel the need for some help from our side, please, don't hesitate and write to us.
